Artist Statement
As a ceramic artist and potter, I strive to create functional objects that strike the viewer’s interest by using the elements and principles of design, such as form, texture and color. For the past ten years, I have often been found throwing on the potter’s wheel, but do not shy away from experimenting with new techniques, such as sgraffito, mishima, and slip trailing, in my everyday work. I am interested in exploring large scale vases with added textures that allow for the glaze to pool and pull down each piece.I strive to understand how glazes will react in different settings in order to manipulate colors to accentuate my forms to further define texture. Exploring forms and glaze combinations expands my knowledge on how glazes react with other glazes and the clay body. I am in a constant endeavor to push the boundaries and expectations of the vase form for everyday users.
